Waste Projects at Wodonga
Worktrainers operates the Resource Recovery and Sales shop and an E Waste recycling facility at Wodonga Transfer Station. These are joint initiatives with the City of Wodonga as a partner. We are reducing waste going to landfill, creating work opportunities and creating a supply of low cost consumer items to the public from goods rescued at the tip face.
Resource Recovery and sales shop at Wodonga Transfer Station.
Worktrainers has had experience in managing Transfer Stations for the Shires of Campaspe, Strathbogie and the City of Greater Shepparton for over 15 years. Since 2008 we have been managing the Resource Recovery and Sales shop at the newly established Wodonga Transfer Station in Kane Rd Wodonga.
We rescue abandoned goods and re-saleable items from the tip face in conjunction with Council staff. This is then moved to the Resource Recovery and Sales shop, cleaned up and priced and made available to the general public. Items include furniture, electrical goods, toys and sporting goods, books, games and information technology equipment. Useable pieces of timber and building and plumbing supplies are also recovered from the tip face and made available to the public.
We are also commencing an E Waste recovery initiative at the Wodonga Transfer Station in partnership with Wodonga Council. This will see abandoned IT items such as TV’s, PC boxes, screens, printers and other peripheral IT and entertainment devices stripped down and recycled. Once these types of goods are broken down to their component parts they begin to assume value and are re-saleable to recyclers. If they are not stripped down they have no value and go to landfill. E Waste is an increasing percentage of landfill particularly with the advent of flat screen TV’s.
In commencing these initiatives at the Wodonga Transfer Station, we are achieving the triple bottom line of being:
Financially sustainable by turning otherwise worthless abandoned goods into a source of supply of recycled and cost efficient goods
Environmentally sustainable by reducing waste going to landfill and allowing recovery and re-use of still serviceable goods- and in the case of E Waste by disassembling worthless abandoned goods, we are turning the component product into a valued source of raw material that can be re-used.
Socially sustainable by creating both work experience and award wage jobs that would not exist if such a pro-active initiative was not in place.
